GRADING A DIAMOND

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) is the world's largest independent laboratory for grading Lab-Grown Diamonds. IGI is renowned for its strict grading standards and is the most trusted laboratory in the diamond industry. IGI's diamond grading system is the most accurate way to assess the quality, carat, color, clarity, and cut of a diamond. We are proud to offer IGI-certified diamonds to our customers and stand behind each diamond we sell.

There are 4 main factors in grading a diamond, the Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight.

CUT

Although some people may think that a diamond's size or carat weight is the most important factor, the Cut grade, also known as the Wow-Factor, is actually the most crucial aspect for most consumers. This is because a diamond's Cut grade is determined by various factors, such as symmetry, polish, proportions, and the size and positioning of its facets. When a diamond is cut to optimal standards, such as with an Excellent or Ideal Cut, it will emit more sparkle and brilliance, and may even appear larger than a diamond of a larger carat weight that is cut poorly, such as with a Poor, Fair, or Good Cut.

COLOR

The color of a diamond is a critical factor that influences its value. Most diamonds have some degree of color, so the purer the color, the higher the diamond's value (excluding fancy color diamonds). The color of a diamond is graded on a scale that ranges from D to Z, with D being completely colorless and Z having a noticeable yellow or brown tint. Typically, the diamonds that are sold fall within the D to J range. Within this range, D, E, and F are considered colorless, while G, H, I, and J are considered near-colorless.

CLARITY

A diamond’s clarity grade is based on the imperfections or “inclusions” that it may or may not have. The fewer the number of inclusions, the more “perfect” the diamond is, and therefore the greater the value is. Even nearly imperceptible surface or internal imperfections can alter the sparkle of the diamond which affects it’s value.

CARAT

Carat weight is a unit of measurement used to express the weight of a diamond. One carat is equivalent to 0.2 grams, so a 5 carat would be 1 gram. In the context of diamonds, carat weight is often used as a primary factor in determining the value of a diamond, with larger diamonds generally being more valuable than smaller ones of similar quality.
